8 Ways to Prevent Varicose Veins from Progressing

Picture
Veins carry blood back to the heart, and due to leg veins working against gravity, there is a great deal of strain on these vein valves. If the valves become weak or damaged, blood may flow in the wrong direction, pool up, and cause the veins to swell or twist. This is what causes varicose veins to form.

These veins are equally unappealing as they are painful. Varicose veins can lead to complications such as ulcers, blood clots and bleeding. Unfortunately, there is no guaranteed way to prevent varicose veins from forming, but a few lifestyle changes can relieve some symptoms and help
reduce progression.

Varicose Veins During Pregnancy

Picture
Approximately 40% of pregnant women will get varicose veins. These bulging, bluish veins can be unpleasant to look at and may also result in some uncomfortable symptoms such as leg swelling or heaviness. The many pregnancy-related changes place greater burden on veins, which drain blood back toward the heart.

According to the American Pregnancy Association, pregnancy is associated with an increase in blood volume, a decrease in the rate at which blood moves from legs up to the pelvis, and surging hormones such as increased levels of progesterone which causes blood vessel walls to relax.

A Reflection on Our Blessings

Don’t Let Varicose Veins Haunt You Anymore

Picture
This spooky season is meant to be filled with fun decorations, sweet desserts, and funny costumes; not scary varicose veins. So, don’t let venous conditions prevent you from taking your kids and grandkids trick-or-treating or out to a pumpkin patch and cider mill.

Don’t be spooked by treatment. Varicose veins are a venous condition, caused by weak or damaged vein valves, that affects about 20% of all adults. But diagnosis does not mean you have to accept venous insufficiency as a permanent part of your life. In fact, the sooner venous conditions are treated, the easier it will be to prevent them from progressing into more serious stages of vein disease.

Why Fall is the Best Time to Treat Varicose Veins

Picture
These cooler temperatures setting in may mean you are no longer wearing shorts and skirts, and that you don’t have to see your veins every day, but don’t ignore them!

If you have spider veins or varicose veins, the fall and winter seasons can be the perfect time to get treatment.

Working from Home?
Take Care of Your Legs with These 7 Tips

Picture
While working from home can be beneficial in allowing us to wear pajamas all day with access to unlimited coffee, it can also present some challenges to our health if we're not careful.

There are currently more people working from home than ever before.

According to Stanford economist Nicholas Bloom, “42 percent of the U.S. labor force [is] now working from home full-time.”

To put this in perspective, the Pew Research Center estimates that only 7% of workers in the U.S. had access to a “flexible workplace” benefit or telework prior to COVID-19.

5 Activities to Support Vein Health in the Summer

Picture
If you are reluctant to show off your summer body at the beach this year due to uncomfortable, protruding varicose veins, you are not alone.

It is estimated that 50% of the U.S. population over 50 years old has varicose veins. Furthermore, the prevalence of varicose veins is greater in women (55%) compared to men (45%).

Many of our patients would have to disagree with the popular “Summertime, and the livin’ is easy” lyrics because varicose veins can be even more painful during the summer because the hot summer sun can weaken the skin’s upper layers (diminishing moisture and elasticity) which makes it difficult for veins just below the surface to flex and move properly.

Celebrate Independence From Varicose Veins Today

Picture
This 4th of July, in the spirit of celebrating our independence as a nation, we at Taylor Vein Solutions want to offer you freedom from your venous conditions.

Globally, over 190 million people suffer from varicose veins or Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI). These disorders cause valves in the veins to work improperly, resulting in blood that pools in the legs and makes veins protrude and lose their form. More than 30 million people are affected by this in the United States alone, yet sadly many individuals remain untreated.

What are Spider Veins?

Now you might be wondering, what are these odd looking, web-like blood vessels on my legs? These could be something you have, or you may know someone else who has them. Also known as telangiectasis, they are a confluence of dilated venules (small veins) under the superficial layer of the skin. These veins are commonly referred to as spider veins and range in diameter from 0.1 to 1 mm.
