8 Ways to Prevent Varicose Veins from Progressing

Veins carry blood back to the heart, and due to leg veins working against gravity, there is a great deal of strain on these vein valves. If the valves become weak or damaged, blood may flow in the wrong direction, pool up, and cause the veins to swell or twist. This is what causes varicose veins to form.
These veins are equally unappealing as they are painful. Varicose veins can lead to complications such as ulcers, blood clots and bleeding. Unfortunately, there is no guaranteed way to prevent varicose veins from forming, but a few lifestyle changes can relieve some symptoms and help reduce progression.

A proper diagnosis and personalized treatment plan are necessary for varicose veins to heal fully since they are often a sign of an underlying condition; however, the following tips may help to reduce pain and discomfort while also promoting healthy blood flow.
1. Move Frequently
In addition to the benefits to physical appearance, a regular exercise routine can keep vein valves functioning properly. Small exercises like peddling your feet, stretching your ankles, or bending and unbending your legs can promote circulation and a healthy heart to pump blood with less effort.
2. Elevate Your Legs
Elevating your legs above your heart at least three times a day for 15-20 minutes can encourage blood to flow up towards your heart. Flexing and pointing your feet in this position can further promote circulation and reduce swelling.
3. Wear Compression Stockings
Using fitted compression stockings will encourage blood to flow from the ankles upwards to the heart. These keep your vein valves functioning correctly and reduce blood pooling, swelling, and pain.
4. Exercise Daily
Walking is the most beneficial exercise to help prevent varicose veins. Practicing yoga poses, limited biking, and stretching can also be helpful to gently work vein valves.
5. Change Your Diet
Sodium-rich foods result in water retention, which can make varicose veins worse. Foods such as almonds, lentils, and potatoes (high in potassium) can assist in reducing water retention. Eating greens, berries, garlic, and spices can also increase vitamins and minerals while lowering sodium levels.
6. Lose Weight
Another way to prevent varicose veins from worsening is to lose weight if you’re overweight. Fatty tissue can increase the strain on the cardiovascular system, raising blood pressure and promoting further deterioration of the veins.
7. Wear Loose Clothing
Put away your high heels, except for short periods of time, and avoid tight clothing especially at the waist, groin, and leg areas. These can constrict blood flow, adding pressure to veins.
8. Gently Massage Your Legs
A light massage can help improve and encourage proper circulation to decrease swelling and pain. Direct pressure on the veins should be avoided to prevent damage to fragile skin.
