Fun in the Sun

This summer, Taylor Vein Solutions was eager to increase awareness about varicose veins and common misconceptions surrounding vein health with our community.
Walking and physical activity is a great way to support general health and well-being. Our team was delighted to sponsor and attend three 5K events in the Metro-Detroit area: Give and Get Fit, Michigan Senior Olympics and Cruise in Shoes. Each of these events were unique and fun, and it was exciting to meet so many new people. Although we were there to teach, we ended up learning quite a bit as well from both the other amazing organizations and inspiring participants at these events.

Don’t Let Varicose Veins Haunt You Anymore

This spooky season is meant to be filled with fun decorations, sweet desserts, and funny costumes; not scary varicose veins. So, don’t let venous conditions prevent you from taking your kids and grandkids trick-or-treating or out to a pumpkin patch and cider mill.
Don’t be spooked by treatment. Diagnosis does not mean venous insufficiency is a permanent part of your life. In fact, the sooner venous conditions are treated, the easier it will be to prevent progression.

How Venous Conditions are Identified

Venous disease in the lower extremities can lead to several common conditions such as varicose veins, spider veins, and chronic venous insufficiency. These conditions begin with venous reflux, which occurs when valves in veins no longer work properly. Valves typically allow blood to flow one direction through the ankles and legs, but reflux causes blood to flow backwards. This makes it more difficult for veins to transport blood back to the heart.

How Warmer Weather May Affect Leg Veins

Vein disorders have many potential causes, ranging from uncontrollable factors such as age and heredity to flexible influences such as weight and movement. Long, hot days outside can be one painful or uncomfortable cause this summer. Unfortunately, a venous condition risk that cannot be directed is high summer temperatures, which may cause leg veins to dilate, increasing swelling and discomfort.

What to Expect Following Varicose Vein Surgery

When planning to have varicose vein surgery, it’s important to understand that the word ‘surgery’ sounds more invasive than it typically is. Since vein stripping methods began being replaced, vein surgery has, for the most part, been replaced by minimally invasive venous ablation procedures, which are performed in the office setting. The ClosureFast™ catheter in our clinic has shown less pain, fewer complications, better quality of life and nearly 95% reflux free rate at 5 years follow-up.

8 Ways to Prevent Varicose Veins from Progressing

Veins carry blood back to the heart, and due to leg veins working against gravity, there is a great deal of strain on these vein valves. If the valves become weak or damaged, blood may flow in the wrong direction, pool up, and cause the veins to swell or twist. This is what causes varicose veins to form.
These veins are equally unappealing as they are painful. Varicose veins can lead to complications such as ulcers, blood clots and bleeding.

The Importance of Early Diagnosis

Many patients that develop varicose veins in their legs wonder if the condition will fix itself over time. Unfortunately, varicose veins need professional treatment to prevent progression. If you have varicose veins and have been experiencing pain or discomfort but have been putting off seeking treatment, this blog should serve you well. It is common to think that swollen, achy legs will heal with time and rest, but in reality, it’s much more likely that they’ll get worse.

Varicose Veins During Pregnancy

Approximately 40% of pregnant women will get varicose veins. These bulging, bluish veins can be unpleasant to look at and may also result in some uncomfortable symptoms. Many pregnancy-related changes place greater burden on veins, which drain blood back toward the heart. According to the American Pregnancy Association, pregnancy is associated with an increase in blood volume, a decrease in the rate at which blood moves from legs up to the pelvis, and surging hormones such as increased progesterone which relaxes blood vessel walls.

Working from Home?
Take Care of Your Legs with These 7 Tips

While working from home can be beneficial in allowing us to wear pajamas all day with access to unlimited coffee, it can also present some challenges to our health if we're not careful. There are currently more people working from home than ever before. According to Stanford economist Nicholas Bloom, “42 percent of the U.S. labor force [is] now working from home full-time.” The Pew Research Center estimates that only 7% of workers in the U.S. had access to a “flexible workplace” benefit or telework prior to COVID-19.

5 Activities to Support Vein Health in the Summer

If you are reluctant to show off your summer body at the beach this year due to uncomfortable, protruding varicose veins, you are not alone. It is estimated that 50% of the U.S. population over 50 years old has varicose veins. Furthermore, the prevalence of varicose veins is greater in women (55%) compared to men (45%). Varicose veins can be even more painful during the summer because the hot summer sun can weaken the skin’s upper layers (diminishing moisture and elasticity).

Celebrate Independence From Varicose Veins Today

This 4th of July, in the spirit of celebrating our independence as a nation, we at Taylor Vein Solutions want to offer you freedom from your venous conditions. Globally, over 190 million people suffer from varicose veins or Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI). These disorders cause valves in the veins to work improperly, resulting in blood that pools in the legs and makes veins protrude and lose their form. More than 30 million people are affected by this in the United States alone.

What are Spider Veins?
Now you might be wondering, what are these odd looking, web-like blood vessels on my legs? These could be something you have, or you may know someone else who has them. Also known as telangiectasis, they are a confluence of dilated venules (small veins) under the superficial layer of the skin. These veins are commonly referred to as spider veins and range in diameter from 0.1 to 1 mm.
